A “Stop — vehicle too low” message, a corner that sinks overnight, or a compressor that keeps running: this guide explains what each AIRMATIC symptom usually points to, what we check at our Al Quoz, Dubai workshop, and when to stop driving. Free full inspection — written report. Written quote before any work — you approve first.

AIRMATIC is Mercedes-Benz air suspension: an air strut at each corner (an air spring with an adaptive damper), a compressor, a valve block, level sensors and a control module that keeps the car at its target height. It is standard on many S-Class, GL and GLS cars and optional on many E-Class, CLS, ML and GLE versions. Some older SL, S-Class and CL models use ABC (Active Body Control) instead — a hydraulic system with its own pump and fluid, which is checked differently. Most C-Class, A-Class and GLA cars use steel springs.
A ride-height or suspension-mode button on the centre console, or a vehicle-level menu on the screen, is a strong hint that you have AIRMATIC. Not sure? Send us the model and year and we will tell you before you book.
None of these on its own tells you which part has failed. The message only says the system could not reach or hold its target height, or that a component did not answer as expected.
Replacing the compressor because “it is usually the compressor” is how owners pay twice: a leak that was never found will wear out the new one as well. For repair options and the parts we fit, see our Mercedes air suspension (AIRMATIC) repair page.

Air suspension is one of the first things worth checking on a used S-Class, GLS, GLE or E-Class. A car that sits level in a showroom can still have a strut that leaks overnight or a compressor near the end of its life. Our pre-purchase inspection includes a scan of the suspension module and a ride-height and leak check, with a written report. For everything else we do on these cars, see our Mercedes repair page; Range Rover owners with similar warnings can read our Range Rover suspension fault guide. Not sure what we do and don’t do? Read the plain list.
Our team speaks Arabic and English, and the owner is on the workshop floor. We give a fair diagnosis: what needs fixing now, and what can safely wait. And while this page is about Mercedes, Velokar is a multi-brand workshop — American, European, Japanese, Korean and Chinese makes are all welcome.

If the car is at its normal height and the message is the yellow “AIRMATIC — visit workshop” type, short careful trips are usually possible — book an inspection within days. If the red “Stop — vehicle too low” message appears, or the car sits on its bump stops, do not drive far; arrange recovery instead.
No. A leaking air strut, line, fitting or valve block, a faulty level sensor, a relay or a weak battery can all bring up the same warning. A compressor that runs for too long is often the victim of a leak, not the cause. We test before we replace anything.
A slow leak — most often in the air strut on that corner or in its fitting — lets the air out while the car is parked. The compressor lifts the car again on start-up, and works harder each week until the leak is fixed.
Many S-Class, GLS and GL cars have it as standard, and many E-Class, CLS, ML and GLE versions have it as an option. A ride-height or suspension-mode button on the centre console, or a vehicle-level menu, is a strong hint. Send us the model and year and we will tell you.
